An Indian national lost his life after a wooden cargo dhow carrying 18 Indian crew members caught fire and capsized near the Strait of Hormuz, according to Indian government sources.

Officials said the incident took place on Thursday when the dhow, which was transporting general cargo, suddenly caught fire in waters close to the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.

All crew members were rescued by a passing vessel shortly after the accident. However, one Indian crew member died in the incident, while four others suffered burn injuries.

The injured crew members are currently undergoing treatment in Dubai and are reported to be safe and stable.

Sources said officials from the Consulate General of India, Dubai met the rescued Indian nationals on the same night and are closely coordinating with the dhow owner to provide all possible assistance.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most crucial maritime trade routes, handling a significant portion of global oil shipments every day.
