Instagram Tightens Privacy With New ‘Instants’ Feature for Disappearing Photos
New feature allows users to send unedited photos in DMs that disappear instantly after being viewed, with screenshot blocking and enhanced teen safety measures.
Instagram has introduced a new privacy-focused feature called “Instants,” aimed at making personal chats more real, secure, and spontaneous for users across the platform.
As concerns around digital privacy continue to grow, social media users are increasingly looking for safer ways to share personal photos and conversations. Keeping this trend in mind, Instagram has globally rolled out the new Instants feature, which allows users to send disappearing photos directly through their inbox or direct messages (DMs).
The feature enables users to click and send photos directly from the camera without using filters or editing tools. Once the recipient views the image, it disappears automatically within seconds, making conversations feel more private and temporary — similar to features seen on Snapchat.
Instagram said the feature is designed to encourage users to share authentic and casual moments with close friends rather than polished content meant for public profiles.
The Instants feature appears in the DM section with a small photo stack icon on the bottom-right side of the inbox. Unlike Stories or Reels, users cannot edit the images before sending them. They can only add a caption before taking the photo.
Users will be able to share these disappearing images only with “Close Friends” or “Mutuals” — people who follow each other on the platform.
According to Instagram head Adam Mosseri, users are posting less frequently on their public profile grids, and the company wants to create a more private and natural sharing experience through Instants.
Strong Focus on Privacy and Safety Instagram has also introduced several privacy and security measures along with the feature:
Screenshot Blocking: Users will not be able to take screenshots or screen recordings of the disappearing photos.
Private Archive: The sender’s photo will remain saved in a private archive for up to one year and can later be used to create a recap story.
Teen Safety Features: For teenage accounts, existing protections such as Sleep Mode (active from 10 PM to 7 AM) and daily time limits will continue to remain enabled automatically.
The launch of Instants reflects the growing demand for more private and authentic social media interactions, especially among younger users.
