The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially announced the third phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, which will now be carried out across 16 states and three Union Territories ahead of upcoming electoral activities.

According to the Election Commission, the latest phase of the SIR process will cover Odisha, Mizoram, Sikkim, Manipur, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, Telangana, Punjab, Karnataka, Meghalaya, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Delhi, Nagaland and Tripura. The exercise will also be conducted in the Union Territories of Daman and Diu and Chandigarh.

The Special Intensive Revision is a key electoral exercise aimed at updating and verifying voter lists to ensure accuracy, transparency, and inclusion in the electoral rolls. The process includes verification of voter details, removal of duplicate or ineligible entries, and addition of eligible citizens who are yet to be enrolled.

The Election Commission has been carrying out the SIR exercise in phases across the country as part of its efforts to strengthen the electoral system ahead of future elections. Local administration officials and booth-level officers are expected to conduct verification and correction drives during the process.

The move has drawn significant political attention as several states gear up for major electoral contests in the coming months.
