IIT Kanpur Research Finds E20 Petrol Safe for Both New and Older Vehicles

Amid ongoing debates and social media claims about E20 petrol, a study conducted by the Engine Research Lab (ERL) at IIT Kanpur has found that E20 fuel is safe for both new and older vehicles.

Dr. Dhruvraj Kairana, Project Scientist at IIT Kanpur's Engine Research Lab, said the research found no major adverse effects on vehicle engines from using E20 petrol. The study also reported no significant reduction in fuel efficiency that would be considered a serious concern.

Dr. Kairana urged the public not to rely on unverified claims circulating on social media, where E20 petrol has often been linked to reduced mileage and engine damage. He emphasized that these assertions are not supported by the laboratory's findings.

The research team continues to study ethanol-blended fuels and has also worked on E85 fuel, which contains 85% ethanol, as part of ongoing efforts to develop cleaner and more sustainable fuel technologies.

Vehicle owners are advised to follow the recommendations provided in their vehicle's user manual and use E20 petrol in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
