Google Brings Aadhaar-Based Digital IDs to Wallet
Expansion to India Marks Major Step in Global Digital Identity Push
Google has introduced Aadhaar-based verifiable credentials in India through Google Wallet, allowing users to store and use digital IDs securely on their smartphones.
Developed in partnership with the Unique Identification Authority of India, the feature enables Indian users to add their Aadhaar details directly to Google Wallet. This eliminates the need for physical ID cards and simplifies identity verification for everyday tasks.
A key highlight of the system is its strong focus on privacy. Google Wallet uses selective disclosure technology, meaning users can share only specific details—like age or identity confirmation—without revealing full personal information. This ensures safer interactions across both online and offline platforms.
Several platforms in India are already integrating this feature. These include PVR INOX for age verification at cinemas, BharatMatrimony for verified profiles, Atlys for faster visa applications, and Mygate for secure visitor entry. More services are expected to join soon.
Globally, Google is also expanding digital ID support to Singapore, Taiwan, and Brazil. In these countries, users can create ID passes using passport information and store them in Google Wallet for secure identity verification.
This move reflects Google’s broader vision of a digital-first identity ecosystem, making verification more convenient, secure, and privacy-focused for users worldwide.
