North India Sizzles Under Severe Heatwave as Banda Records 48°C
Heatwave intensifies across northern states, with temperatures crossing 45°C in 26 cities and authorities issuing alerts
New Delhi: Large parts of North India are reeling under an intense heatwave, with soaring temperatures severely impacting daily life. According to weather data recorded on May 20, Uttar Pradesh’s Banda emerged as the hottest place in the country, registering a scorching 48°C, the highest temperature reported nationwide.
The extreme weather conditions have pushed temperatures above 45°C in at least 26 cities, as hot winds and blistering sunshine continue to grip several regions. States including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Vidarbha in Maharashtra, and Odisha are among the worst affected by the ongoing heatwave.
Meteorological officials reported that nearly 50 percent of the country recorded maximum temperatures above 44°C on May 20, highlighting the scale of the heat crisis. Experts warn that there is little chance of immediate relief, with temperatures expected to remain between 40°C and 47°C across many regions through the end of May.
The severe heat has disrupted normal life, particularly affecting farmers, laborers, and people working outdoors. Health authorities have advised residents to avoid stepping out during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, consume ORS, and wear light, loose-fitting clothes to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Meanwhile, state governments and local administrations have stepped up precautionary measures, including revising school timings and ensuring water and shelter arrangements for animals. Weather experts caution that conditions could worsen further if pre-monsoon showers fail to arrive in the coming days.
