Gujarat Titans Outclass KKR in Thrilling Chase as Shubman Gill Leads from the Front

New Delhi , April 17: Gujarat Titans continued their dominant run in the TATA IPL 2026, defeating Kolkata Knight Riders by five wickets in a high-scoring encounter at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Skipper Shubman Gill starred with a brilliant 86 off 50 balls, guiding his side to a successful chase of 181 with two balls remaining.

The win marked Gujarat’s third consecutive victory of the season, while Kolkata’s struggles deepened with their sixth straight defeat.

Earlier, KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane opted to bat first but the decision quickly backfired. Mohammed Siraj struck on the very first ball, dismissing Rahane for a golden duck and setting the tone for Gujarat’s disciplined bowling performance. Kagiso Rabada further dented KKR’s top order with a fiery spell, reducing them to 37 for 3 in the Powerplay.

Amid the collapse, Cameron Green played a crucial counter-attacking knock. The Australian all-rounder, riding on a couple of early reprieves, scored a commanding 79 off 55 balls. He found support from Rovman Powell (27 off 20), helping KKR recover and post a competitive total of 180.

In response, Gujarat Titans came out with intent. Jos Buttler provided a quick start with a 25-run cameo, while Sai Sudharsan contributed a brisk 22 to keep the momentum going. The hosts dominated the Powerplay, racing to 71 for 1.

Shubman Gill then took control of the innings, blending composure with aggression. He reached his half-century in just 27 balls and continued to anchor the chase despite occasional wickets at the other end. His innings, laced with boundaries and sixes, kept Gujarat firmly ahead of the required rate.

Though Gill fell in the 17th over, the Titans needed just 23 runs at that stage. Rahul Tewatia and Shahrukh Khan held their nerve in the closing stages to guide the team home at 181 for 5 in 19.4 overs.

Gill was named Player of the Match for his match-winning knock, which proved to be the backbone of Gujarat’s successful chase.
