Opposition Blocks Women’s Reservation Constitutional Amendment in Lok Sabha, Says Amit Shah
Political deadlock stalls key reform aimed at 33% representation for women in Parliament and state assemblies
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday strongly criticized opposition parties after the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, linked to the Women’s Reservation framework, failed to pass in the Lok Sabha. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Shah expressed shock over the developments in the House, calling the situation “highly unusual and disappointing.”
In his statement, Shah alleged that key opposition parties, including Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), and the Samajwadi Party, collectively prevented the passage of the crucial constitutional amendment required to operationalize the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.
He emphasized that the bill aimed to ensure 33% reservation for women in legislative bodies, marking a significant step toward gender equality in political representation. However, according to Shah, not only was the bill blocked, but the reaction from opposition benches—celebrations and slogans—was “deeply condemnable and beyond imagination.”
The development has intensified the political confrontation between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and opposition alliances, with the government accusing rivals of obstructing women’s empowerment initiatives for political reasons.
The failure to pass the amendment has raised fresh concerns over the future of women’s reservation in Parliament and state assemblies, an issue that has long remained at the center of India’s political discourse.
As the debate continues, the incident is expected to further polarize political narratives ahead of upcoming electoral battles, with both sides gearing up to shape public opinion around the stalled reform.
