Former South Africa Star Urges Patience With Teen Sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi

As excitement grows over 15-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi's potential international debut for India, former South African cricketer Daryll Cullinan has urged the cricketing world to take a more measured approach.

Writing in a column for Cricinfo, Cullinan acknowledged Suryavanshi's extraordinary talent but warned that rushing him into international cricket could place unnecessary pressure on a player who is still in his formative years.

Cullinan said the teenager should focus on his education, prepare for his board examinations, play street cricket with friends, and experience as normal a childhood as possible. According to him, nurturing Suryavanshi's personality is just as important as developing his cricketing skills.

The former batter also expressed concern over the intense scrutiny created by the Indian Premier League and social media. He noted that every performance, mistake, or public appearance is instantly dissected by millions online, leaving young players with little respite from criticism.

Cullinan highlighted that the digital age has erased the distance between a young cricketer and public opinion, making mental resilience more important than ever.

He further suggested that Sachin Tendulkar would be the ideal mentor for Suryavanshi, saying few people understand the weight of expectations at a young age better than the Indian batting icon, who experienced similar pressures early in his own career.

The debate over Suryavanshi's international debut has divided cricket experts. While former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has argued that exceptional talent deserves an early opportunity, former spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes the youngster should wait patiently, understand the team environment, and earn his place gradually.

Suryavanshi was recently included in India's T20 squad but did not make his debut during the Ireland tour, with the team management opting to retain its existing combination.

Cullinan concluded that cricket fans should think beyond an immediate debut and instead hope Suryavanshi enjoys a long and successful career that lasts decades rather than burning out under early expectations.
