Supreme Court Dismisses Plea Against Shah Rukh Khan's Mannat Renovation, Questions Petitioner's Intent
The apex court refused to interfere with the renovation approval for Shah Rukh Khan's iconic Mumbai residence, saying there appeared to be substantial compliance with the law.
The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition challenging the renovation of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan's iconic Mumbai residence, Mannat, allowing the approved renovation work to continue.
The plea was filed by Mumbai-based social activist Santosh Daundkar, who alleged that the renovation plan, which includes the addition of two floors to the Bandra bungalow, had not received the necessary environmental clearances. He also claimed that the National Green Tribunal (NGT) overlooked these concerns because Shah Rukh Khan is a prominent film star.
Rejecting the appeal, a Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V. Mohan declined to interfere with the earlier order of the NGT's Western Zone Bench in Pune, which had also dismissed the activist's challenge to the project approvals.
During the hearing, the apex court made it clear that the celebrity status of the property owner had no bearing on its decision. The bench observed that if an individual wishes to add floors to their own house while substantially complying with legal requirements, there is no reason for the court to intervene. It further noted that objections from neighbours or unrelated individuals alone do not justify judicial interference.
The court also questioned the petitioner's motives, stating that it had doubts about his intent. The bench remarked that, at first glance, the case appeared to reflect a personal grievance against Shah Rukh Khan rather than a genuine public interest concern.
With the Supreme Court refusing to entertain the appeal, the approvals granted for the renovation of Mannat, owned by Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan, remain valid.
