Even at 36, Hope Isn’t Fading: Yuzvendra Chahal’s County Cricket Show Puts BCCI on Notice
The veteran leg-spinner continues to make a strong case for an India comeback, picking up wickets in bunches in the County One-Day Cup.
Yuzvendra Chahal may have been out of India’s selection plans for the past few years, but the veteran leg-spinner is showing that his wicket-taking ability remains as sharp as ever. At 36, Chahal is making his presence felt in the County One-Day Cup, delivering a series of impressive performances and once again attracting attention.
On August 9, Chahal played a key role for Northamptonshire against Somerset, picking up three wickets. One of his notable dismissals was that of Archie Vaughan, son of former England captain Michael Vaughan. Chahal’s spell helped Northamptonshire restrict Somerset to just 185 runs in 47 overs.
Northamptonshire then chased down the target comfortably in only 30 overs to secure a convincing victory.
Chahal’s recent run of form has been particularly impressive. In his last seven matches, he has claimed 15 wickets, putting him fourth on the tournament’s list of leading wicket-takers. His performances have underlined his ability to trouble batsmen even on pitches that can favour batting.
He had earlier produced another strong performance against Lancashire, returning figures of 4/60. His consistency in county cricket has now sparked renewed discussion about whether he could once again come into contention for India. Chahal also had a decent outing in IPL 2026, where he picked up 12 wickets in 12 innings despite playing on batting-friendly pitches.
At a stage when age is often considered a disadvantage, Chahal is letting his performances do the talking. His growing wicket tally in county cricket could well put pressure on the Indian selectors to reconsider his international prospects.
For now, Chahal continues to knock on the BCCI’s door—not with words, but with wickets.
