Ashmita Chaliha Creates History, Wins First BWF World Tour Title at Korea Masters

Indian badminton star Ashmita Chaliha scripted a major milestone on Sunday by winning the Korea Masters 2026 women’s singles title in Asan, South Korea. The 26-year-old from Assam defeated China’s fourth-seeded Han Qian Xi in a thrilling three-game final to claim the first BWF World Tour title of her career.

Ashmita overcame a slow start after losing the opening game 14-21. She responded brilliantly in the second game, taking control of the rallies and winning 21-14 to level the contest. The Indian maintained her composure in the decider and secured another 21-14 victory to seal the championship after 53 minutes.

The title marks a significant breakthrough for Chaliha, who had to overcome several challenges during her campaign. In the quarterfinal, she stunned Japan’s top seed and world No. 22 Hina Akechi, fighting back from a game down to win 20-22, 21-15, 21-19.

She then defeated compatriot Rakshitha Ramraj 21-13, 16-21, 21-13 in an all-Indian semifinal to reach the final.

Ashmita’s triumph is particularly impressive given her recent injury setback. A tear in her right knee had kept her away from competitive badminton for nearly three months. She returned to the court in May and has now capped her comeback with a BWF Tour title.

With this victory, Ashmita becomes the fourth Indian player to win a BWF World Tour title this year, following PV Sindhu, Devika Sihag and Tanvi Sharma.

Her Korea Masters triumph marks a new chapter in her career and underlines her ability to fight back under pressure on the international stage.
