UP Women May Get Financial Assistance of Up to ₹50,000 Ahead of 2027 Polls
First instalment of ₹20,000 may be released before the election; three more instalments of ₹10,000 each could follow if the BJP returns to power
The Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government is reportedly considering a new scheme that could provide eligible women with financial assistance of up to ₹50,000 ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
According to the proposal under discussion, eligible women could receive an initial instalment of ₹20,000 before the election. If the BJP returns to power, three additional instalments of ₹10,000 each could be provided, taking the total assistance to ₹50,000.
The proposal is still under consideration and no final decision has been announced. The scheme is reportedly aimed at providing direct financial support to women and encouraging self-employment, small businesses and economic independence.
Who could be eligible?
Economically weaker women are expected to receive priority. The proposed beneficiary pool may include women from SC, ST and BPL families, as well as economically weaker households. There is also discussion about including women from families with an annual income of up to ₹12 lakh, although the final eligibility criteria have not yet been decided.
The Women and Child Welfare Department could play a key role in preparing the scheme.
Focus on self-help groups
The proposed initiative could also be linked with Uttar Pradesh's existing network of women's self-help groups. Around 98.76 lakh women in the state are reportedly associated with self-help groups under the State Rural Livelihood Mission.
The government may explore using these existing networks to connect beneficiaries with livelihood opportunities and small-scale businesses.
A poll-time women-focused initiative?
The proposal is also being viewed in the context of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, where women voters are expected to remain an important electoral constituency.
Similar women-focused financial assistance schemes are already being implemented in states such as Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Haryana. Against this backdrop, the proposed UP scheme could become a significant part of the state's welfare and political strategy.
However, it is important to note that the ₹50,000 assistance is currently only a proposal. Not every woman in Uttar Pradesh would automatically be entitled to the amount. The government is yet to announce the final beneficiary criteria, payment schedule and number of beneficiaries.
A formal government announcement will clarify whether the scheme is approved and exactly who will be eligible for the financial assistance.
