Junior Doctor’s Death Sparks Ragging Controversy at Surat Medical College
Four senior postgraduate doctors have been booked for allegedly harassing junior residents at a government medical college in Surat
Police in Gujarat’s Surat have registered a case against four resident doctors of Government Medical College (GMC) over allegations of ragging and harassment of junior students, following the death of a 30-year-old first-year postgraduate medical student.
The student, Harsh Pandya, was found dead at his hostel on August 9. Police subsequently registered an FIR against four second-year postgraduate students of GMC, which is affiliated with New Civil Hospital.
The accused doctors—Nirali Vasave, Anuj Maheshwari, Dikshita Ghewaria and Hina Bhut—had already been suspended for six months after the institute's anti-ragging committee found them responsible for allegedly harassing 10 first-year residents, including Pandya.
According to the complaint, the senior residents allegedly subjected the juniors to repeated humiliation and verbal abuse and also made complaints against them to faculty members. The juniors were reportedly called to the department's serology laboratory through WhatsApp messages on August 5, where they were allegedly kept for around two hours and subjected to mental harassment.
Police have booked the four accused under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to wrongful confinement, intentional insult and abetment, officials said.
GMC Dean Dr Jayesh Brahmbhatt said the FIR was filed after the institute's anti-ragging committee found the four students responsible, allowing further legal action to proceed.
A high-level committee is also examining the incident. Show-cause notices have reportedly been issued to the head of the Microbiology Department and three other faculty members in connection with the matter.
