West Bengal Revises Bakrid Holiday Schedule After Change in Government

Bakrid holidays in West Bengal have become a major talking point this year after the state government revised the earlier holiday schedule.

Last year in November, when the government led by Mamata Banerjee was in power, an official notification had announced a two-day holiday for Bakrid. The break was scheduled for May 26 and 27, covering the day before Eid and the day of the festival.

However, following the change in government, the new BJP administration has revised the earlier decision. The government, led by Suvendu Adhikari, has now declared only a one-day holiday on May 28.

The revised schedule brings three key changes: the holiday has been reduced from two days to one, the dates have shifted from May 26–27 to May 28, and the new administration has overturned the previous decision taken under the former TMC government.

The move is being viewed as part of an administrative policy shift under the new state government. With the revised holiday calendar, schools, government offices, and other institutions across the state will now follow the updated schedule.
