Over 1,400 candidates in fray; extensive security, webcasting, and women-managed booths mark preparations.
The first phase of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 is set to take place tomorrow, covering 152 constituencies across 16 districts. The polling marks the beginning of a crucial electoral process in the state, with 1,478 candidates contesting in this phase.
The Election Commission of India has put in place elaborate arrangements to ensure that the voting process remains free, fair, and peaceful. Polling will be conducted across 44,376 booths, including nearly 3,000 auxiliary booths to manage voter turnout efficiently.
In a significant step towards inclusivity and empowerment, 5,444 polling booths will be managed entirely by women, while 207 model booths have been set up to enhance voter experience. Additionally, special arrangements have been made for accessibility, with PwD-managed booths established in Balurghat and Asansol Dakshin constituencies.
Women’s participation remains notable this election season, with 167 female candidates contesting in the first phase. To ensure transparency, the Commission has mandated 100% webcasting at all polling stations, enabling real-time monitoring of the electoral process.
Security measures have been intensified, including the deployment of Quick Response Teams (QRTs), flying squads, and CCTV surveillance, to prevent any untoward incidents and maintain law and order during voting.
The second phase of polling for the West Bengal Assembly Elections is scheduled to be held next Wednesday, continuing the multi-phase electoral exercise in the state.
