TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee Suspended for Remainder of Monsoon Session Over Remarks Against Woman MP

New Delhi: Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament Kalyan Banerjee has been suspended from the Lok Sabha for the remainder of the ongoing Monsoon Session after allegedly using objectionable and unparliamentary language against a woman MP during proceedings in Parliament.
The motion to suspend Banerjee was moved by Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and was subsequently passed by the Lok Sabha. The Chair observed that the remarks made by the TMC leader had undermined the dignity of the House and were inconsistent with parliamentary decorum.
The controversy reportedly erupted after an exchange between Kalyan Banerjee and several former TMC colleagues who have since joined the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI). The disagreement took place after the Lok Sabha was adjourned amid continued opposition protests.
The MPs involved in the exchange reportedly included Mitali Bag, Shatabdi Roy, and Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar of the NCPI. While the exact trigger for the argument remains unclear, opposition members intervened to calm the situation. Banerjee later left the House.
Following the incident, Mitali Bag, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, and other NCPI MPs met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and submitted a written complaint, alleging that Banerjee had made offensive remarks against a woman parliamentarian.
Acting on the complaint, the Lok Sabha adopted a resolution suspending Banerjee for the remaining duration of the Monsoon Session. The Chair stated that the alleged remarks had compromised the dignity and decorum of Parliament.
The development comes amid shifting political dynamics in West Bengal, where several TMC MPs and MLAs left the party after the Assembly elections and joined the NCPI. The defecting MPs now sit separately in the Lok Sabha and have publicly extended support to the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The incident further intensified tensions in Parliament, where repeated disruptions forced the Lok Sabha to adjourn for the day while proceedings in the Rajya Sabha continued.
