AISA Alleges Illegal Detention of 19 Students Near Nizamuddin, Seeks Suspension of Delhi Police Commissioner

New Delhi, July 22: The All India Students' Association (AISA) has alleged that 19 students were detained by the Delhi Police near Hazrat Nizamuddin on Tuesday evening solely on suspicion that they were on their way to participate in a protest at Jantar Mantar.

According to AISA, the incident occurred at around 4:00 PM on July 22, when police personnel allegedly stopped a group of students near Nizamuddin and detained them without any formal charges. The organisation claimed that the students were picked up merely on the suspicion of joining the protest.

AISA further alleged that the police used force during the detention. Quoting one of the detained students, the organisation claimed that several students were assaulted, sustained injuries, and were forcibly pushed into a police bus. It also alleged that the students were taken to Badarpur, far from their residences.

Condemning the incident, AISA accused the Delhi Police of suppressing democratic rights and peaceful protests, alleging that the national capital was being turned into a "cantonment" through heavy policing and preventive detentions.

The student organisation has demanded the immediate suspension of the Delhi Police Commissioner, holding the police leadership accountable for the alleged action.

There was no immediate response from the Delhi Police to AISA's allegations at the time of publishing this report.
