Former India cricketer and BJP Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh has come under fire after sharing a video showing two young men apparently in an intoxicated state, claiming it highlighted the worsening drug situation in Punjab.
Harbhajan shared the video on social media on August 10, expressing deep concern over the condition of Punjab’s youth. In his post, he said that Punjab, once known for its progress, courage and spirit, was now struggling with the growing menace of drugs. He also appealed to governments and people to “save Punjab from drugs.”
However, the video soon became the centre of a political controversy after Punjab Cabinet Minister Dr Baljit Kaur claimed that it was not from Punjab but from Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan.
Following the clarification, leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party criticised Harbhajan Singh, accusing him of sharing misleading content and damaging Punjab’s image. The issue also triggered a wave of trolling on social media.
The video reportedly shows two individuals struggling to stand properly, apparently under the influence of an intoxicating substance. While Harbhajan presented it as an example of Punjab’s drug crisis, reports subsequently identified the location as Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan.
The controversy has now taken a political turn, with the ruling party in Punjab questioning the former cricketer’s decision to share the video without verifying its location.
As of the latest reports, Harbhajan Singh has not issued a public response or clarification regarding the video. The identities and circumstances of the two individuals seen in the footage have also not been established.
