Congress Backs TVK, DMK Calls It a ‘Betrayal’ in Tamil Nadu Power Battle

The political landscape in Tamil Nadu has turned volatile after the Indian National Congress announced conditional support to actor-turned-politician Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), for government formation in the state.

The decision has triggered a sharp reaction from the ruling ally Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), which described Congress’ move as a “betrayal” and “a stab in the back.” DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai accused Congress of abandoning its long-time ally for political gains, warning that the party could face political extinction because of the decision.

The controversy erupted after Congress leader K. C. Venugopal confirmed that Vijay had sought support from the party following the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election results. Soon after, Congress officially declared that it was ready to extend conditional support to TVK in order to help form the next government.

The development comes as a major setback for DMK, which suffered a disappointing performance in the elections. The sudden shift by Congress, considered one of DMK’s oldest national allies, has intensified political tensions across the state.

DMK leaders argued that Congress was making a “self-destructive” decision by backing TVK despite the party having only a limited number of legislators. According to party leaders, the move appears to be driven by political bargaining and ministerial ambitions rather than ideological alignment.
