Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh Apologises Over Hanuman Garhi Namaz Remark, Says He Never Intended to Contradict CM Yogi
Former BJP MP clarifies his statement, says he only referred to the temple steps and regrets if his remarks hurt anyone's sentiments.
Former BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has issued a clarification and apology after his remarks on the Hanuman Garhi namaz controversy sparked a political row. He said that if his statement had hurt anyone's sentiments, he had no hesitation in apologising.
The controversy began after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath alleged that namaz had been offered at Hanuman Garhi during the Samajwadi Party's tenure. Responding to a media query on July 17, Brij Bhushan had said that namaz was not offered on the steps of Hanuman Garhi, triggering speculation that he was contradicting the Chief Minister.
Clarifying his remarks, Brij Bhushan said the question posed to him specifically referred to the temple steps, and he had answered accordingly. He admitted that he should have clarified at the time that while namaz was not offered on the steps, allegations regarding prayers being held elsewhere within the larger 52-bigha temple complex were a separate matter.
He emphasised that he had no intention of challenging or opposing Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's statement. "My purpose was never to contradict the Chief Minister. If anyone's sentiments have been hurt because of my remarks or the way they were presented, I sincerely apologise," he said.
The former MP also accused sections of the media of presenting his statement out of context, leading to unnecessary controversy. He maintained that his clarification and the Chief Minister's statement could both be understood in their respective contexts.
