Uttarakhand Govt Announces Fuel-Saving Measures Amid West Asia Crisis

Amid growing pressure on the global supply chain due to the ongoing West Asia crisis, the Government of Uttarakhand has announced a series of fuel-saving measures following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for fuel discipline and energy conservation.

The decisions were taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. The state government said the measures aim to reduce fuel consumption, promote sustainable transport, and encourage energy efficiency across both government and private sectors.

One of the major announcements includes reducing the number of vehicles in the Chief Minister’s convoy by half. CM Dhami has already initiated the move by cutting down his convoy to just five vehicles.

The cabinet also decided to promote a “No Vehicle Day” once a week and encourage work-from-home practices in both government and private offices wherever possible.

To further reduce fuel usage, government departments have been instructed to increase the use of video conferencing for official meetings. Citizens will also be encouraged to use public transport more frequently and participate in weekly vehicle-free initiatives.

The government has additionally decided to limit the use of air conditioners in government and private buildings as part of broader energy-saving efforts.

In a significant push toward green mobility, the state plans to introduce an effective electric vehicle (EV) policy soon. Under the new guidelines, 50% of all newly purchased government vehicles will be mandatory EVs. The government also plans to expand EV charging infrastructure across the state.

The cabinet further directed officials holding multiple departmental responsibilities to use only one vehicle during a single day to minimize fuel consumption. The Transport Department has also been asked to improve the capacity and services of public buses to support increased reliance on public transportation.

The Uttarakhand government said these measures are aimed at ensuring responsible fuel usage and preparing the state for possible disruptions in global energy supplies.
