PM Modi Urges Indians to Cut Spending, Avoid Gold Purchases and Foreign Trips Amid Global Crisis
Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to citizens to conserve fuel and foreign exchange reserves as rising crude oil prices and tensions between the US and Iran put pressure on India’s economy.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged Indians to adopt austerity measures, including avoiding gold purchases, postponing foreign travel, and working from home wherever possible, as India faces economic pressure due to rising global oil prices and tensions in West Asia.
Addressing a public event in Hyderabad, Modi said India must take steps to protect its foreign exchange reserves and reduce fuel consumption at a time when prolonged geopolitical tensions are disrupting global energy supplies.
The Prime Minister’s appeal comes amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. The situation intensified after US President Donald Trump reportedly rejected Iran’s latest peace proposals, leading to fresh concerns in global energy markets. Following the developments, crude oil prices reportedly crossed 105 dollars per barrel, raising fears of inflation and energy insecurity worldwide.
According to reports, Iran had proposed transferring part of its enriched uranium stockpile to another country but refused to dismantle its nuclear facilities, a condition reportedly pushed by the United States.
India, which imports more than 88 percent of its crude oil requirements, remains highly vulnerable to global oil price fluctuations. The sharp rise in energy prices has also added pressure on the Indian rupee, which has weakened against the US dollar in recent weeks.
During his speech, Modi specifically appealed to citizens to avoid buying gold for at least one year, stating that gold imports place an additional burden on India’s foreign exchange reserves during times of global uncertainty.
He said gold purchases consume a large amount of foreign currency and urged people to take a pledge in the national interest to avoid buying gold temporarily.
India is among the world’s largest importers of gold, with demand usually surging during weddings and festival seasons. Since most gold is imported, increased purchases lead to higher dollar outflows and a rise in the country’s import bill.
The Prime Minister also advised people to avoid unnecessary foreign travel, overseas vacations, and destination weddings for at least a year to help conserve foreign exchange reserves.
In addition, Modi encouraged citizens to reduce fuel consumption by using public transport, carpooling, and work-from-home arrangements wherever possible.
The appeal has sparked widespread discussion online, with many debating the economic impact of global tensions and the need for temporary lifestyle adjustments in the national interest.
