Mumbai Faces Possible Water Cuts from May 1 as Reservoir Levels Drop Amid El Niño Concerns
Civic body Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation weighs phased restrictions as India Meteorological Department warns of weak monsoon due to El Niño impact.
Mumbai residents, already struggling with intense summer heat and rising humidity, may soon face another major challenge—a possible water cut across the city. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) is considering implementing water supply restrictions from May 1 due to declining reservoir levels and concerns over below-average rainfall this year.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the impact of El Niño is expected to result in weaker monsoon rainfall than usual, raising serious concerns about water availability in the coming months. In response, BMC officials have begun reviewing emergency measures to ensure that the city’s existing water reserves last through the critical summer period.
Mumbai depends on seven major reservoirs for its daily water supply, and officials report that water levels in these lakes are falling rapidly. To ensure that the current stock lasts until the end of August, the civic body has already initiated proactive and planned measures.
Authorities have warned that if water supply continues at the present full-capacity rate without any restrictions, the available reserves may only last until the end of July. This has prompted urgent discussions on introducing phased water cuts across residential and commercial areas.
The move is aimed at preventing a severe water crisis during the peak summer months when demand is at its highest. Residents may soon be advised to use water carefully and avoid wastage as the city prepares for a potentially difficult season ahead.
With monsoon uncertainty looming large, Mumbai may once again have to rely on strict water management to navigate the summer months safely.
