PM Modi Showcases India's Defence Progress, Emphasises Push for Self-Reliance

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday underlined India's recent defence achievements, saying the country's progress in indigenous manufacturing and military technology reflects its growing capabilities and determination to become self-reliant.

Speaking during the June edition of his monthly radio programme, Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister said the first six months of 2026 had been marked by several milestones that have strengthened India's security and boosted national confidence.

Recalling his recent visit to Kolkata, Modi highlighted the induction of INS Dunagiri, INS Sanshodhak, and INS Agray into the Indian Navy. He said the vessels were designed and built entirely in India, demonstrating the country's expanding expertise in defence production.

The Prime Minister also hailed the successful maiden flight of the first Made-in-India C-295 military transport aircraft, noting that 40 aircraft are currently being manufactured in the country. He said the project is expected to create jobs, support MSMEs, strengthen the aerospace sector, and further the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Another major achievement highlighted in the address was the successful test of the Long-Range Land-Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM) developed jointly by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian industry partners. The missile underwent a successful flight test from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast earlier this month, meeting all mission objectives.

Stressing the importance of indigenous innovation, Modi said India's defence ecosystem is advancing rapidly through homegrown technologies, enhancing the country's security while reducing dependence on foreign imports.
