Lok Sabha Passes Bill to Increase Supreme Court Judges' Strength to 38
The amendment increases the Supreme Court's sanctioned strength from 34 to 38 judges to help clear pending cases faster.
New Delhi | August 3, 2026: In a significant move to address the growing backlog of cases in India's highest court, the Lok Sabha on Monday passed the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026, increasing the maximum sanctioned strength of Supreme Court judges.
With the passage of the bill, the Supreme Court will now be able to have up to 38 judges, including the Chief Justice of India (CJI), up from the previous limit of 34.
The amendment is aimed at reducing the mounting pendency of cases, enabling faster disposal of matters, and facilitating the constitution of more Constitution Benches to hear cases involving important legal and constitutional questions.
The Centre has maintained that expanding the number of judges is necessary to improve judicial efficiency and ensure timely delivery of justice as the workload of the Supreme Court continues to increase.
The move is expected to strengthen the apex court's capacity to handle complex litigation while reducing delays in hearing and disposing of pending cases.
