Vinod Kambli’s Life to Be Adapted Into Hindi Web Series
Series to explore the former cricketer’s career, achievements and personal struggles
Former India cricketer Vinod Kambli’s extraordinary life is set to be brought to the screen as a Hindi web series instead of a feature film. Titled ‘Kambli’, the series is being developed for ZEE5 and will be directed by Abhijit Deshpande.
The project is being produced by Ravi Bhagchandka of 200 Not Out Productions, which was also associated with the acclaimed documentary Sachin: A Billion Dreams.
Deshpande revealed that he began writing Kambli’s story in 2019. The project was initially planned as a Marathi feature film, but extensive research convinced him that Kambli’s life had too much material and drama to fit into a single movie. The makers subsequently decided to develop it as a web series.
More than a cricket story
The series will trace Kambli’s journey from being one of India’s most talented young batsmen to facing challenges in his professional and personal life. His cricketing achievements and career setbacks will form an important part of the narrative.
However, Deshpande wants the project to go beyond cricket and controversies. The filmmaker has described Kambli’s story as fundamentally a human story, with the series aiming to portray his struggles and different phases of life with sensitivity and realism.
Casting and shooting plans The lead actor has not yet been finalised. The makers are reportedly searching for a relatively new face who can closely match Kambli’s appearance, personality and mannerisms.
Although the shooting schedule is yet to be officially confirmed, the team is planning to begin filming in November 2026. The shoot is expected to take around three to four months if everything goes according to plan.
Once the series is completed, Deshpande is expected to return to his work on a biopic about filmmaker V. Shantaram.
