Indian Government Summons Meta Again Over Removal of PM Modi's Facebook Video
Centre seeks explanation from Meta's top officials after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's post was briefly taken down, despite the company calling it an inadvertent error.
The Indian government has intensified its scrutiny of Meta after a Facebook video featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi was temporarily removed from the platform. The incident, linked to a post concerning the NEET examination controversy, has escalated tensions between the Centre and the social media giant.
According to Electronics and Information Technology Secretary S. Krishnan, the government has issued fresh summons to Meta's senior officials, asking them to appear and explain how and why the Prime Minister's video was removed. While Krishnan did not disclose the names of the executives who have been summoned, he said the government expects a detailed explanation from the company.
Earlier, Meta apologized for the incident, stating that the video had been removed unintentionally due to an internal error. A company spokesperson said the content was restored as soon as the mistake was identified.
S. Krishnan also revealed that Meta has assured Indian authorities it has introduced new safety protocols for VVIP and high-profile accounts to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The government, however, has adopted a stricter stance and is seeking greater accountability over the matter.
