Gold Smuggling Network Busted on Gyaneshwari Express, ₹3.09 Crore Gold Seized

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has busted a suspected gold smuggling operation at Nagpur railway station, seizing foreign-origin gold worth approximately ₹3.09 crore.

Acting on specific intelligence, the DRI’s Nagpur team intercepted a passenger travelling on the Gyaneshwari Express (Train No. 12102) and recovered 16 gold biscuits from his possession. The total weight of the seized gold was around 2.165 kilograms.

According to preliminary information, the gold was allegedly smuggled into India through the India-Bangladesh border and was being transported by train to another destination.

Gold concealed under tape and newspapers The accused allegedly attempted to hide the gold to evade detection. The gold biscuits were wrapped in coloured paint adhesive tape and then concealed inside old newspapers.

However, based on intelligence inputs, DRI officials kept a watch on the suspect and intercepted him at Nagpur railway station. The concealed gold was subsequently recovered.

The DRI has seized the gold under provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, and arrested the passenger.

Investigators are now trying to establish the complete chain behind the alleged smuggling operation. The agency is examining where the gold entered India, who supplied it, who was supposed to receive the consignment and whether other people are involved.

The DRI suspects that the seizure could be connected to a larger gold-smuggling network. Further investigation is underway to identify other members of the alleged network and trace the movement of the seized gold.
