Delhi Records Wettest April Since 2008; Fresh Rain Spell Expected from May 2
After unusual April showers and heatwaves, a strong western disturbance may bring thunderstorms, lightning, and widespread rain across several Indian states in early May
New Delhi: April 2026 turned out to be an unusual mix of heavy rainfall and intense heat in Delhi, making it the wettest April since 2008. The city recorded 29.7 mm rainfall during the month—significantly higher than the normal average of 16.7 mm. However, the second half of April also saw temperatures soaring beyond 40°C, with a peak of 42.8°C recorded on April 25.
Weather fluctuations are set to continue into May. While May 1 may bring a brief pause in rainfall activity, meteorological agencies indicate that a stronger western disturbance will become active from May 2. This system is expected to trigger a fresh spell of pre-monsoon activity across North India.
Between May 4 and May 6, Delhi is likely to witness peak weather activity, including thunderstorms, gusty winds, lightning, and moderate rainfall. These conditions may bring temporary relief from the heat but could also disrupt daily life.
Beyond Delhi, several parts of the country—including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and the northeastern states—may experience light to moderate rainfall, with isolated heavy showers. Southern states like Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu are also expected to see thunderstorms, while central and western regions may receive scattered showers.
Overall, India’s weather pattern in the coming days is expected to remain dynamic, with alternating spells of rain, storms, and heat.
