Delhi Approves ₹2,500 Monthly Aid for Women Under 'Lakshmi Yojana'; Eligibility Conditions Announced

The Delhi government, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, has approved the much-awaited Lakshmi Yojana, a financial assistance scheme that will provide ₹2,500 per month to approximately 1.7 million eligible women in the national capital. The scheme is expected to be rolled out around Raksha Bandhan, marking a major welfare initiative aimed at supporting economically vulnerable women.

According to the Delhi Cabinet, the scheme is designed to provide direct financial assistance to women from low-income families. However, beneficiaries must meet a set of eligibility conditions to qualify.

Under the scheme, women from families with more than three children will not be eligible. Families owning a four-wheeler will also be excluded. Additionally, households with an annual electricity consumption exceeding 2,400 units, those with a GST-paying member, or families with a government employee will not qualify for the benefit.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta described the scheme as a significant step toward women's empowerment, stating that the government is committed to ensuring direct financial support reaches those who need it most.

Many women in Delhi have welcomed the initiative, saying the monthly assistance will help manage household expenses, particularly during festivals such as Raksha Bandhan, Teej, Navratri, and Diwali. Several beneficiaries also supported the eligibility criteria, arguing that government aid should be reserved for genuinely deserving families.

Some residents agreed that financially stable households with private vehicles or other economic advantages should not receive the subsidy. Others also endorsed the decision to exclude families with more than three children, citing the importance of responsible population management.

Experts echoed similar views. Dr. Sameena Pathan said the conditions could help ensure the scheme reaches the most deserving beneficiaries while also promoting awareness about population control. Dr. Tasneem Patel welcomed the initiative, emphasizing that clear eligibility rules are essential to prevent misuse and ensure the benefits are delivered to the intended recipients.

Responding to questions over the scheme's limited coverage, Delhi minister Ashish Sood clarified that the first phase will include 1.7 million women, with the government planning to expand the programme in the future to cover more eligible beneficiaries.
