Around 6 Lakh More Voters May Be Dropped from Bengal Rolls as SIR Hearings Conclude

With the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls nearing completion in West Bengal, nearly six lakh additional voters may be removed from the State’s electoral list, officials indicated. The proposed deletions follow the conclusion of hearings conducted as part of the verification process.

In the first phase of the SIR exercise, approximately 58 lakh names were struck off the rolls. As a result, the total number of registered electors in the State declined to 7.08 crore, according to election authorities.

During the revision drive, notices highlighting “logical discrepancies” in enumeration forms were issued to nearly 1.36 crore voters. Election officials stated that details of around 1.23 crore voters have since been verified and corrected where necessary.

However, about 6.25 lakh voters reportedly failed to attend their scheduled hearings despite receiving official notices. In the absence of clarification or supporting documentation, these entries are now likely to be deleted, officials said. Authorities emphasized that the SIR exercise is aimed at improving the accuracy of electoral rolls by identifying duplicate, shifted, or unverifiable entries. The final decision on deletions will be reflected in the updated voter list once the revision process formally concludes.
