60-Foot-Wide Road Construction Begins in Varanasi’s Dalmandi
₹215 crore project to improve access to Kashi Vishwanath Dham; work expected to be completed by November 2026
Construction of a major road-widening project has begun in Varanasi’s Dalmandi area, with the Bhoomi Pujan ceremony held amid Vedic chants and conch-shell blowing. BJP MLA from Varanasi South, Dr Neelkanth Tiwari, performed the ceremony and formally initiated the construction work.
The project involves developing a 650-metre-long and 60-foot-wide road to provide smoother connectivity to the Kashi Vishwanath Dham. The project, estimated to cost ₹215 crore, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 2, 2025. The road is scheduled to be completed by November 2026.
The project is being implemented by the Public Works Department (PWD). Before construction began, demolition and clearance work continued for around nine months in the densely populated Dalmandi market.
According to the report, 180 of 187 buildings identified under the project were demolished. The structures included six mosques, of which two were completely demolished and four partially demolished.
The new road is expected to ease traffic congestion and improve access to the Kashi Vishwanath Dham. The project also includes modern facilities for electricity, water supply and road infrastructure, with around ₹25 crore allocated for civil works.
Members of both Hindu and Muslim communities were present during the Bhoomi Pujan. Several local residents, including Mohammad Jamal alias Bhola, Shakeel and Rahul, welcomed the project, saying improved connectivity could benefit local businesses.
With construction now underway, the project is expected to significantly transform the congested Dalmandi corridor and improve the route to one of Varanasi’s major religious destinations.
