Thalapathy Vijay’s Big Move: Tamil Nadu Assembly Takes Stand Against Delimitation

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and TVK leader Thalapathy Vijay has taken a strong position against population-based delimitation of Lok Sabha constituencies. The TVK government presented a proposal in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Wednesday, raising concerns that delimitation could reduce the political representation of southern states, particularly Tamil Nadu.

During the Assembly discussion, Vijay strongly supported 33% reservation for women, but said it should be implemented within the existing 543 Lok Sabha seats rather than increasing the total number of seats through delimitation.

The proposal puts forward three key demands. First, the current strength of 543 Lok Sabha seats should remain permanently fixed. Second, the seats currently allocated to each state should be protected and made permanent. Third, the government has demanded 33% reservation for women in state legislative assemblies.

Vijay argued that southern states have successfully implemented population-control measures and should not be disadvantaged because of their demographic achievements. He warned that population-based delimitation could alter the balance of political representation between northern and southern India.

The Chief Minister also called for maintaining the existing 2.2:1 population-to-representation ratio in the Lok Sabha.

The move marks a significant political stand by Vijay’s TVK government and adds momentum to the wider debate over delimitation, federal representation and the political interests of southern states.
