Delhi-NCR Traffic Chaos: Rain, Kanwar Diversions Add to Commuters’ Woes

Delhi-NCR commuters are facing a tough time on the roads as monsoon rain, Kanwar Yatra-related restrictions and ongoing road diversions combine to disrupt traffic across the region.

The Delhi-Meerut Expressway has remained closed to regular traffic in Uttar Pradesh due to the Kanwar Yatra, pushing vehicles towards alternative routes such as NH-9, the Eastern Peripheral Expressway and the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway. The restrictions are expected to ease from August 13, but the diversions have already increased pressure on neighbouring roads.

The traffic situation has also affected cab and auto-rickshaw passengers. Longer routes, fuel consumption and extended travel times caused by diversions are reportedly pushing up fares, leaving commuters to spend more time and money on daily journeys.

Meanwhile, rainfall has added another layer of difficulty. Waterlogging and slippery roads are slowing traffic at several stretches across Delhi-NCR, while commuters have been advised to allow extra travel time and check traffic updates before starting their journeys.

In Delhi, the New Delhi Municipal Council’s crackdown at Khan Market has also made headlines. The civic body removed several shop and restaurant signboards, citing violations of advertising regulations. The action triggered protests from traders, following which the drive was halted.

With Kanwar-related restrictions, monsoon showers and infrastructure-related diversions continuing to affect mobility, commuters across Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad may have to brace for further delays.
