N. Chandrasekaran to Step Down as Tata Sons Chairman in February 2027

Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran has decided not to seek reappointment when his current term ends on February 20, 2027, bringing his nearly decade-long leadership of the Tata Group towards an end. He has communicated his decision to the Tata Sons board and will continue as chairman until the completion of his existing term.

Chandrasekaran, who became Chairman of Tata Sons in 2017 and was reappointed for a second term in 2022, said the decision was taken after the board failed to reach a resolution on extending his tenure. He has asked the board to begin the succession process soon to ensure a smooth transition.

His decision comes ahead of Tata Sons’ August 18 Annual General Meeting, amid uncertainty over his reappointment and differences surrounding the group’s future governance. Tata Trusts hold a controlling stake of about 66% in Tata Sons, making their position significant in matters concerning the holding company.

During his tenure, Chandrasekaran has overseen major strategic initiatives across the Tata Group and has chaired the boards of several major group companies, including Tata Steel, Tata Motors and Tata Consumer Products.

The announcement has also affected Tata Group stocks. Shares of several Tata companies came under pressure on Wednesday, with some stocks falling by as much as 4% following news of his decision.

Chandrasekaran’s departure will mark a significant leadership transition for one of India’s largest business conglomerates. The Tata Sons board is now expected to focus on identifying his successor and ensuring continuity across the group.
