Trump Administration Approves Civil Nuclear Deal Allowing Saudi Arabia to Enrich Uranium
Thirty-year agreement marks a major shift in US-Saudi cooperation, raising concerns over regional security and nuclear proliferation.
The United States has approved a landmark 30-year civil nuclear agreement with Saudi Arabia, allowing the Kingdom to enrich uranium on its own soil for civilian nuclear energy purposes. The decision by the Trump administration is expected to significantly reshape the strategic landscape of the Middle East.
According to reports, the agreement will be formally announced soon and will involve American companies in developing Saudi Arabia's civilian nuclear programme. A joint US-Saudi feasibility study is also expected to pave the way for the construction of uranium enrichment facilities within the Kingdom.
The move is particularly significant given Saudi Arabia's long-standing rivalry with Iran. Analysts believe the agreement could alter the regional balance of power and intensify concerns about a potential nuclear arms race in West Asia.
Nuclear non-proliferation experts have cautioned that while uranium enrichment for civilian purposes does not automatically lead to nuclear weapons production, it provides the technological capability that could be used for military purposes in the future. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has previously stated that if Iran acquires nuclear weapons, Saudi Arabia would pursue a similar path.
Both the Biden and Trump administrations had previously explored nuclear cooperation with Saudi Arabia. However, unlike the United Arab Emirates, which accepted a "123 Agreement" with the US without seeking domestic uranium enrichment rights, Saudi Arabia has insisted on maintaining that capability.
The development also comes amid expanding defence ties between Saudi Arabia and nuclear-armed Pakistan. Recent statements by Pakistani officials suggesting potential strategic cooperation have further fuelled concerns that the agreement could have implications extending beyond civilian energy, particularly in the context of regional security and US efforts to counter Iran.
