US Senate Passes Russia Sanctions Bill, India Among Countries Facing Potential 100% Tariff
Bill now moves to House; Trump could get power to impose steep tariffs on countries buying Russian oil and gas
The US Senate has passed a bipartisan bill aimed at tightening sanctions against Russia and countries that continue to purchase its oil and gas. The legislation was approved by an overwhelming 86-11 vote and could allow President Donald Trump to impose tariffs of up to 100% on imports from major buyers of Russian energy.
The bill, renamed the “Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026,” is now expected to move to the US House of Representatives. If approved by the House, it will be sent to President Trump.
According to the report, India, China, Azerbaijan, Hungary and Slovakia are currently among the top buyers of Russian oil and gas and could potentially face the proposed tariffs.
US lawmakers supporting the legislation argue that revenues from Russian energy exports help sustain Moscow's economy and indirectly support its war in Ukraine. The bill also seeks sanctions against Russian officials, oligarchs and financial institutions.
The legislation additionally extends the Iran Sanctions Act of 1996 until 2031, targeting companies that invest in Iran's energy sector.
The House is scheduled to return on August 31, when lawmakers are expected to take up the legislation. If it becomes law, the measure could have significant implications for India-US trade relations, global energy markets and countries dependent on Russian crude.
