PM Modi, Netherlands PM Hold Key Talks, Elevate Ties to Strategic Partnership

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held official talks with Netherlands Prime Minister Rob Jetten at the Dutch Prime Minister’s official residence, Catshuis, in The Hague, marking a major step forward in bilateral relations between the two nations.

During the high-level meeting, both leaders agreed to elevate India-Netherlands relations to a “Strategic Partnership,” reflecting growing trust, shared democratic values, and expanding cooperation between the countries. The leaders also adopted an ambitious roadmap aimed at deepening collaboration in trade and investment, defence and security, emerging technologies, maritime affairs, renewable energy, and education.

The discussions highlighted increasing business and investment opportunities, with both sides recognizing India’s economic growth as a promising avenue for Dutch companies. Special emphasis was placed on cooperation in Water, Agriculture, and Health (WAH), with the leaders agreeing to strengthen joint efforts on large-scale water management projects and expand collaboration in healthcare research, digital health, agriculture, and food safety.

Trade and investment were key priorities during the talks. Both Prime Ministers emphasized the importance of the proposed India-European Union Free Trade Agreement and called for its early signing and implementation. They also stressed cooperation in critical minerals to strengthen resilient global supply chains.

Technology and innovation also featured prominently in discussions, with India and the Netherlands agreeing to expand collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductor development. The leaders encouraged youth engagement through joint hackathons between both countries.

In the field of sustainability, the two sides pledged stronger cooperation in renewable energy, green hydrogen, biofuels, green shipping, and maritime logistics to support a sustainable future.

Education and mobility partnerships were also discussed, including a notable agreement between Nalanda University and University of Groningen to promote higher education collaboration.

Prime Minister Modi also thanked the Dutch government for facilitating the return of 11th-century Chola plates, highlighting growing cultural cooperation. Both sides welcomed collaboration between Leiden University Library and the Archaeological Survey of India to enhance historical research.

Following the official talks, India and the Netherlands signed 14 agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) across sectors including technology, green energy, trade, mobility, education, culture, and WAH.

Prime Minister Modi invited Prime Minister Jetten to visit India, an invitation that was accepted, further reinforcing the growing partnership between the two nations.
