India Raises Concern at UNGA Over Iran Conflict, Calls for Restraint and Safe Maritime Routes

India has voiced serious concerns over the ongoing conflict in Iran and the Gulf region during a session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), urging all parties to exercise restraint and prioritize diplomatic solutions.

In a statement delivered at the UNGA, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Harish Parvathaneni, emphasized the need to de-escalate tensions and ensure the safety of civilians amid the crisis.

Referring to the developments since the outbreak of the conflict on February 28, 2026, India reiterated its consistent position advocating dialogue and diplomacy as the primary means to resolve disputes. The statement also highlighted the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations.

A major concern flagged by India was the impact of the conflict on commercial shipping, particularly through the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz. The country expressed alarm over reports of military attacks targeting commercial vessels, noting that such actions threaten global trade and energy security.

India also pointed to the loss of lives of Indian seafarers during the conflict, underlining the human cost of escalating tensions in the region.

Condemning attacks on civilian maritime operations, India stated that targeting commercial shipping and endangering innocent crew members is unacceptable and violates international law. It called for strict adherence to global legal norms governing freedom of navigation and commerce.

Furthermore, India strongly urged for the immediate restoration of safe and unimpeded maritime movement through the Strait of Hormuz, stressing its importance for global economic stability.

The statement reflects India’s broader diplomatic stance of promoting peace, stability, and rule-based international order, especially at a time when geopolitical tensions continue to rise in the Middle East.
