India, Japan Deepen Strategic Ties as PM Sanae Takaichi Holds Summit with PM Modi

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi was accorded a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on Thursday before holding the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking a significant step in strengthening the long-standing strategic partnership between the two countries.

The summit is expected to cover a wide range of issues, including defence cooperation, economic security, trade, investment, technology, innovation, connectivity, and regional stability in the Indo-Pacific.

Takaichi, who arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday for a three-day official visit, was received by Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh. The Ministry of External Affairs described the visit as an important milestone in advancing the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.

Ahead of the summit, Takaichi emphasised the growing importance of closer cooperation with India amid evolving geopolitical and economic challenges. She said discussions with Prime Minister Modi would focus on three key priorities—strengthening the strategic partnership, enhancing economic security, and expanding business collaboration through greater investment and innovation.

A major highlight of the visit is the Japan-India Joint Economic Forum, where more than 150 Japanese companies and business organisations are expected to explore new opportunities for trade, investment, manufacturing, and industrial cooperation with Indian counterparts.

Both leaders are also expected to reaffirm their commitment to a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) and discuss deeper cooperation under the Quad framework, underscoring their shared vision for a rules-based international order, regional peace, and maritime security.

In addition to official meetings, the Japanese Prime Minister will participate in business engagements aimed at strengthening economic ties and encouraging greater collaboration between Indian and Japanese industries.

Takaichi's visit, her first official trip to India since assuming office, reflects the growing importance of the India-Japan partnership as both countries seek to expand cooperation in strategic, economic, and technological sectors while addressing emerging regional and global challenge.
