When Vijay debuted in 1992 with Naalaiya Theerpu (“Tomorrow’s Verdict”), nobody imagined the title would one day define his political future. More than three decades later, the verdict has arrived not from moviegoers, but from voters, as Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as a major force in Tamil Nadu politics.
Behind Vijay’s rise stands his father, veteran filmmaker S. A. Chandrasekhar, who spent decades shaping his son’s career. Born in Tamil Nadu in 1945, Chandrasekhar built his reputation through socially driven films focused on justice, corruption, and the struggles of ordinary people. His breakthrough came with the 1981 blockbuster Sattam Oru Iruttarai, later remade in Hindi as Andhaa Kaanoon starring Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth.
Even after Vijay’s debut film failed, Chandrasekhar continued backing him with multiple projects until Poove Unakkaga turned Vijay into a household name in 1996. Over the years, the actor evolved into “Thalapathy,” one of Tamil cinema’s biggest superstars.
But the relationship between father and son later faced a dramatic breakdown. In 2020, Vijay filed a legal case against his own parents after a political party was reportedly registered using his name without consent. The controversy shocked Tamil Nadu and created a visible rift within the family.
By 2023, however, reconciliation had begun. Chandrasekhar publicly admitted that despite differences, the bond between them remained strong.
