The Ministry of Steel convened a one-day Chintan Shivir at the National Institute of Secondary Steel Technology (NISST) in Mandi Gobindgarh, Punjab, to advance discussions on green steel production, with special emphasis on the secondary steel sector. The event brought together senior government officials, CPSE representatives, industry leaders, technical experts, and industry associations to examine pathways toward low-carbon steelmaking. Inaugurating the session, Steel Secretary Sandeep Poundrik underscored the significance of the secondary steel sector, noting that it accounts for nearly 47% of India’s total steel output. He highlighted India’s consistent growth across steel production, consumption, and installed capacity, which has been rising annually by 8–10%. He also commended NISST’s expanding role in capacity building through regular training programs across steel clusters nationwide. Poundrik stated that NISST has been designated as the nodal agency for green steel certification and has issued certificates to 76 industries, covering 10.98 million tonnes of production so far. He further revealed that the Ministry is developing an incentive scheme to encourage technology upgrades in the secondary steel sector, aimed at reducing carbon emissions. Deliberations during the Shivir focused on emerging low-carbon technologies, including hydrogen-based ironmaking, green hydrogen injection for CO₂ reduction, and vertical shaft DRI processes using water gas. Experts also discussed the adoption of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to enhance renewable energy utilization and reduce grid dependence. Export prospects for alloy steel and challenges linked to the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) were also examined. The Shivir concluded with a shared commitment among stakeholders to accelerate innovation and sustainability in India’s steel industry.
