One Password for Public Wi-Fi Across India! TRAI’s New Plan Could Transform Digital Connectivity

If you frequently use public Wi-Fi at railway stations, libraries, parks, airports, or shopping malls, the hassle of repeated OTP verifications and multiple logins may soon become a thing of the past. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India is preparing a new system that could completely change the public internet experience in the country.

TRAI has released a new consultation paper aimed at improving the PM-WANI framework and making internet access simpler and more user-friendly. Under the proposed system, users may only need to log in once using a single password or OTP to access public Wi-Fi networks across India.

This means that after one-time authentication, users will be able to seamlessly connect to more than 4 lakh public Wi-Fi hotspots nationwide without having to repeatedly register at every new location.

The upcoming system is also expected to focus heavily on cybersecurity and digital safety. To ensure secure online payments and banking transactions, the network will reportedly use WPA3 (Wi-Fi Protected Access 3), one of the latest and most advanced Wi-Fi security standards. This would help keep UPI transactions and other digital activities protected from cyber threats.

The government is also planning separate strategies for urban and rural areas. While cities are expected to receive high-speed public internet connectivity, villages could benefit from a community Wi-Fi model designed to improve digital access in remote regions.

The move is being seen as a major step toward strengthening India’s digital infrastructure and expanding affordable internet access for millions of users across the country.
