India's First Private Orbital Rocket Vikram-1 Set to Mark Historic Launch

India is preparing to enter a new era of space exploration as Vikram-1, the country's first privately developed orbital rocket, gears up for launch from Sriharikota between July 12 and August 4, 2026. The mission represents a major milestone, highlighting the increasing role of India's private space industry alongside government-led efforts.
Designed specifically to launch small satellites, Vikram-1 features a lightweight carbon composite structure, making it both strong and efficient. The rocket is powered by solid-fuel boosters and a 3D-printed liquid engine, with its entire design and manufacturing carried out in India.
Vikram-1 is capable of carrying up to 350 kilograms of payload into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and 260 kilograms into Sun-Synchronous Orbit (SSO), making it suitable for a wide range of commercial and scientific satellite missions.
One of the rocket's most remarkable features is its autonomous onboard intelligence system. Unlike conventional launch vehicles, Vikram-1 requires no pilot or joystick-based control. Instead, it uses advanced onboard computing to make real-time decisions throughout the mission.
At the heart of this system is a mission computer named Ramanujan, which works in conjunction with sophisticated flight software to manage guidance, navigation, and mission operations. Once the rocket reaches orbit, the onboard intelligence enables it to independently execute critical flight decisions, enhancing precision and mission reliability.
