Indian Railways to Replace 40-Year-Old Reservation System with AI-Powered Upgrade
New PRS System Will Predict Ticket Confirmation Chances with 94% Accuracy
In a major technological overhaul, Indian Railways is set to replace its 40-year-old Passenger Reservation System (PRS) with a modern AI-powered platform aimed at improving ticket booking and passenger convenience.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw chaired a high-level meeting with railway officials on Monday and directed them to begin shifting trains from the old reservation system to the upgraded platform starting in August.
According to railway officials, the existing PRS has been in operation for nearly four decades and is no longer capable of efficiently handling the rapidly increasing passenger load and modern digital demands. The upcoming system is expected to provide faster processing, improved reliability, and smarter passenger services.
One of the biggest features of the new reservation system will be its AI-based prediction technology. Earlier, the accuracy of predicting whether a waiting-list ticket would get confirmed was around 53 percent. With the help of artificial intelligence, the prediction accuracy has now reportedly increased to 94 percent.
This means passengers will be able to know the likelihood of their ticket confirmation at the time of booking itself, helping them plan their journeys more efficiently and avoid uncertainty.
The move is part of Indian Railways’ broader modernization drive focused on digitization, smart infrastructure, and passenger-friendly reforms. Officials believe the new system will significantly improve the overall ticket booking experience for millions of daily railway users across the country.
