India’s participation in the Pax Silica initiative has marked a significant moment in the evolving global technology and economic landscape, with leaders framing the move as a decisive step toward strengthening digital sovereignty and supply chain resilience.

Articulating the broader vision behind the initiative, officials underscored the inseparable link between economic security and national security. The programme’s ambitions extend across the full technology value chain — from critical minerals and semiconductor manufacturing to advanced artificial intelligence capabilities. Pax Silica, they noted, represents a commitment by like-minded nations to shape the future through innovation, collaboration, and technological leadership.

U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor described India’s entry into Pax Silica as both “strategic and essential,” highlighting the coalition’s role in defining the emerging economic and technological order. He stressed that the initiative is designed to secure the entire “silicon stack,” spanning mineral extraction, chip fabrication, and deployment of frontier AI systems. Gor emphasised that the partnership is fundamentally about ensuring that democratic societies retain influence over the most critical drivers of global growth.

The signing, held at the India AI Impact Summit, conveyed a clear message about deliberate and cooperative technology development. Policymakers and industry leaders alike indicated that the future of AI and advanced computing will be shaped by nations committed to long-term resilience, trusted ecosystems, and shared values.

A high-level fireside chat following the signing further reinforced this narrative. Shri S. Krishnan, Secretary, MeitY, spoke of India’s integrated strategy linking AI, semiconductors, and critical minerals, with an emphasis on “resilient collaboration with trusted partners.” Industry leaders echoed the urgency and opportunity of the moment. Sanjay Mehrotra, CEO of Micron Technology, highlighted the importance of secure, resilient supply chains, while Randhir Thakur, CEO and MD of Tata Electronics, characterised Pax Silica as a timely step aligned with the semiconductor sector’s longstanding focus on materials, innovation, and compute.

Together, the discussions reflected a shared recognition that the AI-driven technological shift is already underway and that strategic cooperation will be central to navigating it.
