Serena Williams Yet to Decide on Wimbledon Singles Return as Wildcard Spot Remains Open

Serena Williams' highly anticipated return to competitive tennis could take another significant step at Wimbledon, with coach Rennae Stubbs hinting that tournament organizers may be waiting on the American legend's decision regarding a singles entry.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion, who ended her four-year retirement earlier this month, has so far limited her comeback to doubles appearances at Queen's Club and the Berlin Open. When questioned about a possible singles return, Williams remained non-committal, stating that singles competition is "not my journey right now."

Earlier this week, Wimbledon awarded doubles wildcards to Serena and her sister Venus Williams. However, one women's singles wildcard remains unassigned, fueling speculation that tournament officials are holding the spot in reserve for Serena.

Speaking on the Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast, Stubbs acknowledged the situation, suggesting that Wimbledon would welcome Williams into the singles draw if she chooses to compete.

"There's one wildcard left, and I'm sure Wimbledon is hoping she says yes," Stubbs said, while noting that the final decision rests entirely with Williams.

Despite being part of Williams' coaching team during her comeback, Stubbs admitted she has no inside knowledge of the 44-year-old's plans. She added that a decision would likely need to be made within the next few days as Wimbledon finalizes its entries.

Stubbs also believes that part of Williams would relish the opportunity to compete in singles once again at the All England Club, where she has won seven Wimbledon singles titles.

For now, tennis fans remain in suspense as the former world No. 1 weighs whether to make one of the most remarkable singles returns in the sport's history.
