In a crucial IPL 2026 clash at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) suffered a major setback in their race for the playoffs after losing to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by seven wickets. The defeat leaves CSK in a must-win situation for their remaining league matches.

LSG’s victory was built on a brilliant all-round effort, with left-arm pacer Akash Singh delivering a breakthrough performance and Australian batter Mitchell Marsh producing a destructive innings at the top.

Playing his first match of the season, Akash Singh emerged as the surprise star for Lucknow. The former CSK pacer exploited the bounce on offer and dismantled Chennai’s top order, dismissing skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sanju Samson, and Urvil Patel. His disciplined spell of 3/26 put CSK under pressure early in the innings.

Batting first, Chennai struggled to gain momentum after losing key wickets inside the powerplay. The team managed only 37 runs for the loss of two wickets in the first six overs. Despite the collapse, Kartik Sharma stood tall for CSK, scoring a composed 71 off 42 deliveries. The right-hander showed resilience and helped Chennai post a competitive total.

However, LSG’s chase turned into a one-sided affair, thanks to a blistering partnership between Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis. Marsh, who appeared completely at ease on the bouncy Lucknow surface, launched a brutal assault on CSK bowlers.

The Australian opener smashed 90 runs off just 38 balls, including a game-changing over against Anshul Kamboj in which he struck four consecutive sixes. Marsh’s aggressive approach helped Lucknow race to 86 runs without loss in the powerplay, taking the game away from Chennai.

Josh Inglis played the perfect supporting role as the duo stitched together a 135-run opening partnership in just 11.4 overs. Although both batters fell in quick succession, Nicholas Pooran ensured there were no late hiccups and guided LSG to victory in the 17th over.

The loss pushes CSK into a difficult position in the playoff race, with the five-time champions now needing victories in their final two matches against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans to stay in contention.
