Vijay Rises in Tamil Nadu, Coalition Talks Begin

Tamil Nadu has witnessed a historic political shift as actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay leads his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to become the single largest party in the 2026 Assembly elections. Winning 108 out of 234 seats, TVK is just 10 seats short of the majority mark (118).

For decades, Tamil Nadu politics revolved around DMK and AIADMK, but Vijay’s rise has disrupted this dominance. While he is set to become Chief Minister, the key question remains: who will help him secure the numbers? TVK has initiated talks with potential allies including the Indian National Congress, CPI(M), CPI, and VCK. Their combined support could push Vijay past the majority mark.

Another option is backing from PMK, while an alliance with AIADMK appears unlikely due to its ties with the BJP, which Vijay opposes.

The Congress remains undecided, stressing that any move will align with its ideology and Tamil Nadu’s interests. There is also speculation that Vijay could be invited to form a minority government.

If successful, this would mark a remarkable political moment — a two-year-old party rising to power in a state long dominated by established players.
